hole in piston, causing the air/fuel to explode into the crankcase instead of pushing the piston down....
just a guess, I've had this happen on another car before, scared the crap out of me when the valve cover blew
apart, it was an aluminum valve cover, luckly I didn't get hit by any of the flying pieces
