as usual shug you are painting with a broad brush. the thread you are likely taking this from is simply a motor install. if that was to take "an entire weekend" or "cost $5,000 to $20,000" it'd be your project.
if an owner has something like suspension rebuild for example to do is eager, has the facilities, tools and is ready to participate I would be happy to go help out. im not going to do the work while dude sits there watching, but experience can be invaluable to somebody prepared to get a lil greasy. provides confidence, a comradery that's not about "$9 of pizza and beers".
the candidate needs to be vetted to some extent. if guy's a basket case and that is apparent in phone conversations I might be more reluctant. sound like anyone we know? you can tell if the prospect is solid by discussing the project. have parts, or at least a comprehensive list? how much they've studied it? tools? I don't mind bringing a thing or two, but id like to drive the 911 so you better have some craftsman tools... are they soaking fasteners? and most important is it a daily driver? I'm likely not to touch if that's the case, it adds an urgency I don't need.
ive had pelicans over for projects to help, provide me guidance, and guys that simply wanted to see what I was doing before they dove into it. ive also visited pelican project parties where ive provided insight and others where I was the student. it does not happen like it did a dozen or years ago as the old school BAP (bay area pelican group) guys were a tight bunch. some of us went racing, some of them had kids, other's sold their cars, but to this day were are still in contact via social media and all to seldom get togethers.
goes around comes around.
