Yep, and it goes even deeper than that. I first recognized it in me in high school. I was on the football and basketball teams, but pep rallies, with all their emphasis on "We are US, and therefor better than them!" seemed effed up to me. Why are we better than them? Nationalism, jingoism, all the fighting and killing between religions over who God loves the best - none of it made any sense to me. Still doesn't.
I don't know where or why I lost faith in the "old verities" but I did and I think I'm a better person for it.
