While I do recommend the Wevo shifter, it sounds like adjusting your coupler might solve the problem. Why not give it a whirl since the only cost is pulling carpet for the transmission tunnel?
It's a bit of an art. Adjust, drive, shift, park, adjust, drive, shift, park...until all the gears are where they should be.
You might be able to assess wear on the coupler by twisting the shaft in-place. I went with the factory rubber coupler (I didn't want the slight noise increase of the PSJ) and I found that while there was a 5-10mm square of "play", there was no additional slop when actually moving to engage gears.
