I'm not sure about type 901 transmissions and P265b. My experience with type 915 and other Porsche transmissions is that the special tool sets the seal to the correct depth.
If there is a groove worn by the old seal in the output stub axle, one option to consider is changing the new seal's installation depth just enough to get its lip to ride on un-grooved surface. Good luck!
