The first time would have been the proper time to do some intensive training to wake the GSD out of his drives.
The owners should have been on his butt 24/7 for as long as it took to make themselves boss and alpha dog.
Both owners need to be in sync or it doesn't work.
If not, they should have put it down there.
The human is the only one who get to decide what the GSD's place is in the pecking order and what he gets to destroy.
Even monster dogs have the ability to be subservient to smaller ones.
It is inherent in all of them. (or most)
The GSD was making himself more alpha in the pack by removing his competition.
That could have been their daughter.
