I assume you are replacing the locking ring. Then to tighten the new one a tool is required.

There is a recent thread showing how to modify a large socket to work for the tool. Cheaper than the postage to send one. AHIK.
I've tried the chisel method a few times and all it did was trash the nut without removing it. Even soaked the threads in penetrant. I guess mine were too crusty. I finally caved in a bought the correct tool. With an impact gun and the correct socket it was a breeze.
