Locks revisted

After reading all the threads on door locks, I can clearly see that this seems to be a common 911 problem.

Specifically my problem is that the door locks seem to choose when they want to work. One day they will work fine, all day. Then they wont work for a week. On and off, on and off.

Before I take apart my door to look to see what exactly is up, Id like to ask what specifically should I be looking for.

A couple of threads have revealed numerous possible problems; solenoid failure, actuator/wiring failure, but the most common was the breakage of the plastic ball+cup. Since my locks go on and off at thier discretion, which issue is most likely to be it?

BTW, when i press central locking button (i also have remote alarm/locking), there is a quiet click as though it was trying to lock it but couldnt. The doors unlock fine using the button.

-Matt, trying once and for all to fix this.
