I spent a fair amount of my youth in LaJolla w my dad and siblings. It's definitely the high rent district compared to the rest of San Diego but at least you can see where the value is. Have breakfast outside at the Hotel LaValencia or walk down to the beach on Sea Lane and feel like a rich person for a day.
