I just finished a rebuild on my 915. I replaced all the synchros, 1st through 4th dog teeth and 2 sliders and all the shift bushings and gaskets for about $800. I'm sure most transmissions won't need all the dog teeth and sliders like mine. No special tools used except a hydraulic press, worn out clutch disk, a torch, a Bentley manual and some patience. Really not too difficult once you take a good look at it.
