Yep, the lowly mosquito is probably the greatest risk to travelers there so go for a zero tolerance mosquito policy. They carry malaria, dengue fever, encephalitis and there is no upside to these.
The food, people and history are pretty great. Tell him to enjoy but use his head and he will be fine.
