You don't specify your year of car. It sounds like you have a '70's car that did not have the bracket with the holes for the pins. That's because cars from that era didn't use those knobs and pins to keep the seatbacks up. Rather, they had a strap on them that snapped onto the rear parcel shelf. So it seems like a PO took newer seatbacks that have the knobs and pins and put them in your car which was made for seatbacks that had the strap.

yeah, sorry for not providing sufficient information. my car is '86 and the orange interior is put from the '89 car. had a look at the original black backrests and you are correct - there are no red pins on them. this is what got me really confused, I didn't realize earlier models could have no way to secure the rear seat backrests in place.
