Joel - Another heartbreaker.........So Sorry.......
I can only start to relate from my experience last year. The neighbor dog moved in with me when they got a German Shorthair as a 2nd dog. He even slept with me. Then, after a year, without a word, they took him back. I'd hear him yelping and crying from his kennel in their garage while they were gone all day.
Your experience is 10 times worse I'm sure.......G'luck.
