Buells (the Sportster based ones) never did well as erstwhile Ducati competitors. Oh, they had the speed and handling, they just didn't hold up to constant, high rpm on road use. The Ulysses operates in a far different environment, wherein the deep down torque (and the very narrow platform) really shines. At least that's what Mr. Egan says.

Had a 97 cyclone. Would hunt monsters up in the canyons. It kicked ass until parts started falling off.
That and the red headed step child treatment from the dealerships.
