We've got to have a front plate here. I ran the first 3-3.5 years with no front plate and never got pulled over for it, but didn't want to tempt fate. Someone in the local PCA advertised one of those machined Al plate frames that screws into the tow hook spot, so I bought that and put it on the car. If I ever want to take the plate off, I just unscrew it and pop the cover back on the hole.
