Mirror wiring--need help reading schematic

Friend's '81 SC coupe. The GRY/GRN wire pair coming out the back of the defog switch are pretty roasted. Questions:

1. Any idea why this pair is roasted?
2. Does the GRY/GRN pair feed 12v to the mirror's motor?
3. If I want to disconnect the heating element wires, what's the best/safest way to do this? I don't care about the heating feature, but I do need to retain adjustability.

On the schematic I see that the GRY/GRN wire goes from the switch to the mirror, through the heating element to #4 then BRN piggy backs over to #5, to the coil, then via dashed lines (what are dashed lines representing?) to the motor. But then we've got 12v coming from above (outside mirror switch) via WHT, BLU and BLK/YEL.

Thoughts?
