Depends upon the vehicle model and year, but we have seen everything from the alternator, Litronics headlight controls, PASM/PSM, PCM, to the comfort control system, the immobilizer, and even the DME cooked when this happens. A lot seems to depend upon what was switched on inside the car when the event occurs.

As a lot of these control modules need to be coded to the car, yes, a PIWIS is required, even if it is just to reset some of the systems. Sometimes most of the damage is blown fuses, but there is a lot of electronic stuff in modern cars that really does not like reversed polarity.
