MISSING!! 83sc alternator hub extension aka air duct
My hub extension is missing!!! I am in the middle of tearing down the engine from my 83 SC targa to remedy multiple broken head studs. It has its original 11 blade fan and the correct (for 1983 model year) Paris-Rhône alternator. When I pulled the fan shroud I was shocked to discover there is NO hub extension (aka air diverter duct) installed behind the alternator!! My dad bought this car in 1994 and it has been driven just 40k miles since and we never touched the alternator or realized the hub extension was missing. The car ran well and was not driven hard and the temperature gauge seemed to be in the proper range.
Obviously, running the car all these years with no air diverter is a big no-no and it makes me sick that a previous owner left it this way...
Has anyone encountered this before? How bad of a problem might this be? Do you have any ideas or advice as to what specific damage could have been caused or where I might focus attention as I delve deeper into my 3.0 SC engine?
I could also use advice as to what features to look for as I try to locate a replacement hub extension. I understand they might have changed a bit over the years?
Thanks,
George
