I want to know more. I have a MacBook and an android phone, both with 1/8" headphone jacks. How can VLC allow me to access my library (300G or so) using either device, without having to store my library ON the devices. Neither of them will hold 300G.
I think there is a device I can get which hooks to my router, and allows full library access from any place that has wifi. I am really technology-dumb.

You'll need a Pi (and case and power cable/brick), external hard drive (get one w/ an external power source), and a network cable (to plug the Pi into your network).
I don't feel like writing more documentation (I've been overhauling my courses to teach the new term) but this should get you some idea as the process and let you decide if you want to tackle it.
