I had a similar problem when I converted my 72 from tail to side shift. It was a combination of the firewall bushing and linkage adjustment. I'm not sure which one fixed the problem.

Oh yeah, the little cup bushing at the tranny enr of the linkage was shot too. Couldn't see any diff. when I replaced it. Mind you compared to my old tailshifter it was a tight as "________". You fill in the blank. It was nice to shift with all the new bushings.
