There are a lot of good threads on this. I ended up taking the low tech route and soaked the interior with kerosene until I finally got it to rinse clean, let it dry out, sloshed a couple of quarts of oil around inside, drained those and put it back in. (I did find two extra dipsticks though) If you do a search, you will find some "better" ways to do it. One thing was, my car seemd to run 5-10 degrees cooler after I cleaned 30 years worth of gunk off of the outside of the tank.
