I don't remember ever taking a pocket knife in my pocket, but I believe you can have stuff in checked baggage. Of course, these days, it may get stolen by the baggage checkers.
I've had these things make it through security on my key ring since 9/11.
I've also heard of someone having to get rid of one of these. But I've had them go through on a key ring just fine.
I have a feeling that in the past, tiny pocket folders probably made it through. My grandfather used to carry a small folding buck knife. I'm guessing the blade was around 2" ħa bit that I mostly remember him using to clean under his finger nails. I'll bet that sort of thing would get through back in the day.
