A guy in our Accounts receivable department at a large international company figured out how to steal roughly $300k over several years (late 90's). He didn't exactly tell anyone, but made himself sick enough with anxiety he had to take some time off and ended up hospitalized. His scheme fell apart while he was gone. He hadn't spent a penny.
We had another accountant who had a simpler scheme but it worked well for a while. The game ended with the purchase of a new Mercedes, expensive house and a closet full of Nordstrom's best on a $75k salary (in 1995). Folks started talking, internal audit stepped in. Her goose was cooked.
My ex managed retail stores in the 80's. Their biggest issue with theft was from employees. She caught one she'd sort of become friendly with when the idiot invited her over to her place and showed her around. Walked in the bedroom and the closet door was open and full of new clothes with the tags still on :-)
