Yesterday. Neighbor's 15 year old son was shooting hoops in their driveway. He's helped us out with chores here. Nice kid. At 15, already 6'1" or so...no fear of school bullies, knowing he belongs to a local amateur boxing club. He's also an explorer scout, volunteers for the local sheriff's search and rescue operations. So, I strolled over, said I had something to show him. Asked if he liked posters as we strolled to my garage...for there on my garage wall, back in 1980, I had tacked and stapled a poster advertising the then local Boxing club that the then coach gave me after I donated. Touted as "Oregon vs. Washington"...a club from Vancouver. Pics of the local boxers and their opponents, listing weight classes, etc. Definitely faded, some minor tearing on an edge or two, but still very legible. Tacked to a garage wall for 40+ years wasn't kind to the poster or it's thin paper.
Scott's face lit up like the sun after I told him the poster was his. I walked to the tool rollaway, got a pair of needlenose pliers and carefully pulled thumbtacks and staples. Scott said the poster was older than his mom, and probably the only one left. I'm sure the first statement was true...the second probably true. I'm happy that he understood and appreciated the history he was holding. He talked of consulting with his mom about how to preserve it..
Yep, a fun morning...
