I suppose it all depends on the source of the podcast. A “free” podcast can be either one supported by other means (like NPR or similar corporate backed re-packaging of content) or a new pod that hasn’t gained a following. Many that I have had “live read” ads a la the beginning of radio. Third type is subscription based, which negates the need for ads.
