I've got an '81 911 SC with the original 915 transaxle in it. It's got a Wevo shifter installed, and I noticed recently that the fore-aft motion has quite a bit of slop... Maybe grabbing at straws, but check the lock nuts on your travel stops at the base of the shifter. I had a similar thing happen and the lock nuts had loosened and the grub screws had backed themselves out with vibration...
