Well, the engine having a hard time turning over is generally caused by a problem in the mechanism turning over the engine, rather than an unusual amount of resistance by the engine itself.
My first suggestion: Clean the grounds, especially the one from the battery inside the battery box. Just got at them with some steel wool or wire brush until everything is shiny(disconnect the battery first!) There are several other grounds in the engine compartment as well, you might as well clean them while you;re at it. Your starter is probably not getting as many amps as it needs.
