I'm not strong on my Turbo tech stuff....( others, c'mon, help this guy out)....but I think the 86 Turbo still used the CIS injection system...and therefore would not use the normal "DME" relay that is used for (say) the 84-89 normally aspirated cars that use the Motronic injection.
You should get advice from guys close to Turbos...but also check all manner of grounds and electrical contacts...since the forcred bridging experiment you did seems to indicate trouble of this sort. How handy are you at chasing down electrical issues with a multi-meter?
