Since I have "similar cars" I want to advise that the 928 came in many different configurations. My '83 was the fastest car sold in north america, and that included any and all turbo cars from any manufacturer in the world.
I recently compared my 1990 944 S2 to the performance of the '83 928S 5-speed, by using the numbers Porsche provided in their owners manuals. The 928 beats it to 60 by a hair, they are essentially even at the quarter mile with the nod going to the S2, and in the flying kilometer the S2 is ahead. Now try that with a faster model 928 with 4-valve heads, and the results will be quite different.
Therefore, the S2 is still one very very quick car, especially in real world over-the-road driving.
The 968 is just that much better, with significantly more power and a 6-speed gearbox. Therefore, I wouldn't push my luck too much running against one, and if you're relying on the magazines for the data, toss them, because the cars are almost even with the ultimate handling nod always going to the 968.
Having said that, I believe anyone in a 968 or 944 turbo would still have a hard time running from me on the twisties even in my '83 928S 5-speed. This is because once the cars are moving, the acceleration times are tossed out the window and torque and ultimate suspension design comes into play much more. Porsche didn't really care how fast their cars got to sixty miles per hour, they were much more concerned about what happened once you got to sixty, heh heh.
By comparison, back to the S2 944. It has just about the same power as a turbo, without the turbo lag and heat, and complexity. It's a great driver. The 968 had about 30 more horsepower than the S2, so it's one heck of a machine, again, without the drawbacks of the turbo. I would love to have one of every car Porsche ever built, but the fact of the matter is, some are better than others, but all are to be considered "the gold standard"
