I bought a used M&K 2x2 street muffler without the removable tail pipe. I expected it to drone as almost all other 2x2 ones do and it did right between 2700 and 3200 RPM on my 3.0 83 ROW engine. Because the tail pipe is fixed, I couldnt limit the drone by lengthening the tail pipe. I was able to eliminate it by inserting a tail pipe baffle for a motorcycle. Car Chemistry Exhaust Inserts 3DI25R fit the tail pipe perfectly. One in each tail pipe with one section wrapped in their sound deadening steel wool was the perfect solution. The car still has a growl but very liveable in that rpm range.
