i just went through this with my bmw 3 series. As you stated, the battery needs to be registered to sync with the alternator and computer. I took it to the dealer. It cost $450. The way i see it, by the time I bought the battery and OBSll scan tool it was a wash. I seriously doubt the local auto parts store will do this for free. Their tools only diagnose and provide codes...To hook up the OBDll costs about $150-175....Florida
