Often, the virus warning is just a popup on a website page, which has no power to harm you or your computer, provided you don't act upon it.
What compromises your computer, is if you then follow the malicious instructions which promise to sort it out. In reality, those instructions are tricking you to let a malicious actor in, by entering your password, or downloading and running some program which is supposed to "fix" the nonexistent problem. The so-called "fix" is the real virus. If you haven't done that and you've just got some dodgy popups you may be able to turn your computer off and on and all will be good.
