We often see things laying stationary in the freeway. Entire semi truck retread carcasses come to mind as probably the most common. I've also seen loads of lumber, furniture, and other such debris. It's important to be on the lookout for these things.

The stopped red van was merely the most obvious offender. Pretty easy to focus on that and ignore the role played by the inattentive idiot in the silver van. Just look at how many drivers successfully avoided all of that, both before and after the collision.
