Imagine you're rolling your dolly around and all of a sudden something you missed stops the wheels or one leg. You have a lot of potential energy stored in that weight way up at the top of the dolly. There's your non-orthogonal loading.
A body in motion tends to stay in motion.
Once it starts coming down there's no stopping it.
I just want to give you the benefit of my experience of moving spacecraft around on air pads.
