The pump died due to chunks of piston circulating inside the engine. The root cause is not 100% certain, but the immediate effect was that an intake valve broke or dropped into number 3 cylinder, and proceeded to get the hell beaten out of it while decimating the piston. Engine locked up shortly afterwards as the intake rocker arm broke, and its adjustment bolt jammed the camshaft.

Destroyed piston and cylinder and bent rod led to a total replacement of the sets of those components, along with oil pump and oil cooler and all the other while-you're-in-there components.
