I am fortunate to have both - an 01 R1100S with 42,000 miles and an 03 ST4s with 6,800 miles. Both have the same recommended service interval, every 6,000 miles. On my recent 6.000 service the valves did not need an adjustment. So far the Duc has not been that much more to service than the S, but I know that when the valves do need an adjustment that the price goes up. I think we all need to step back and admit that motorcycling is not an inexpensive hobby. But what hobby is? Unless you are a competent mechanic and have the tools, time, and space to do your own, then plan on spending some money if you follow the regular service intervals. Both bikes are a dream to ride and I would have a hard time choosing between them if I had to. As Mr. Black says, "it costs money to drink good whiskey and ride the train".

The other issue is the dealer you use. I would not have bought the Duc, even considered it, if my BMW dealer I trust did not also offer Ducati. A good service department close by is the most important option on any motorcycle in my opinion.
