Let me shine a little light on you, as a Howard Dean supporter I wrote a bunch of letters to people all over the country including Iowa and New Hampshire. The outcome was not what I wanted, but I NEVER recieved a letter saying "what the heck does a guy from Michigan think he can tell me that I don't already know". I gave my return address and my personal reasons for supporting some guy from Vermont, I trust they were well recieved if not influencial.
If you believe in freedom of speech, and that you just might not have a complete world view despite watching Fox or CNN or BBC or reading the Toronto Star then reading what someone else has to say might be relevant and something new to be learned.
I know Tony Blair is not running again, but if he were I bet some Americans would feel compelled to voice their opinions no mater what venue was avaliable to them.
Without having a few of those letters in my hands, dare I condem them, can you?
