Silver is the creme de la creme colour for early 911's or 912's. It's the German racing colour.
Interesting history: It came about from the early Mercedes racing teams being a few kilos over the weight limit for a particular race (sorry, none my reference material is at hand to provide exacts), so the racing director ordered the white paint to be removed seeing as it was really the only non functioning part of the race car. Bare alluminium remained (beautiful).Hence the racing silver, and the subsequntly legendary 'silver arrows'.
