Yep, it's been about a year since I did this myself and as far as I recall, you don;t really get a good visual. You CAN, however get a good feel by going through the starter hole. I believe I did something like propping the tranny on my leg and steadying it with my right arm wrapped over the top of it. With my fingers through the starter hole I was able to manipulate the fork just enough to get it to go on. Took a bit of wrestling, but it worked.

The real key was to have the tines of the fork pointing towards the engine and guiding them into place as you slide the tranny on.
