BR,

Unless that clutch disk has been changed before, it is not a rubber-centered disk! Those did not come out until '78 with the SC model.

The 'smell' ... a burnt-phenolic odor is probably due to slippage due to a thinner-than-spec disk. Does it slip on the highway in 5th gear?

A Sachs kit should solve all of your clutch problems, and the same kit is applicable to all '72 thru '86 915's.
