They changed the transmission (transaxle) in 87 from a 915 to a G50. The biggest shifting and synchro complaints seemed to eminate from the 915 gearbox thus the popularity of the short shifter, with mixed results. Some feel the short shifter shortens more than the shift throw.
It is interesting to note that Porsche introduced it's short shifter to keep the shifting arm from hitting the side of the sport seat when shifted.I'm sure Warren can add significant history to this brief anecdote.
