Its the ink int he newspaper that acts as a fine polish, thus the sparkle. Perhaps the blue paper is so abrasive it pretty much does the same. Trick to really clean glass is to first clean it with plenty of water and soap (make sure to get all of the soap off) and then to "polish" it with Windex (make sure it has amonia in it) and newspaper. Try not to get the Windex on the paint as it could stain it a bit.
