When folks say I want "this" installed and the price is quoted over the phone it's not going to always hold.
You mention "check everything." Why did the engine have to come out? Were you swapping parts? Engines? Trans?
We all b!tch about shop costs, but then when a shop tries to stick to an estimate and has to get things in there to meet a budget while earning a decent pay, some folks will then complain that the job was crappy because this wasn't done or that should have been better. And I'm not just talking about 911's. Most of us are pretty anal about our cars, and it's probably why most of the DIY repairs take much longer than the pro-hours...because we tend to do extra work, like cleaning, adjusting or general "make it right" work. That's not always the case, but I for one can't bring myself to do only what the estimate calls for if there are problems that I can't ignore. If I have hours left, I won't just button things up and let the client deal with the problem(s) later...just so I can profit more from efficient work on the estimated repair. If I don't have hours left, I'll consult the client.
