I always tell my newbies to pretend that there is a bounty on every dead biker that is turned in, and that it was headlines on the morning news.
When the lady takes a break from her eye makeup to answer the phone, and then looks at you, smiles, turns on the signal and then comes over on you it's not a surprise.
I always get a laugh when I tell newbies that the safest place (besides the garage) on a bike in SoCal is on the freeway, they always laugh. Everyone is (usually) going the same direction, no side road access, relatively similar speeds, and good pavement conditions for the most part. Makes commuting here a blast.
