I've never run into an ex...but I did move 100 miles away from where they all live and have been with the same woman for 7 years.

Still, Jim's story reminds me a bit of a high school friend's little sister. Had the biggest crush on her from 8th grade until senior year of high school (and into college). Never dated, but started going out as friends in college whenever I was back home. The last time I saw her, she basically told me that I was the right guy for her and so on. I was 4 years into the relationship with my now wife at that point.

She was a smart girl in middle school and very well put together as an adult, but a few years of LSD in high school has made her as dumb as a rock. She's jumped from abusive, controlling boyfriend to abusive, controlling boyfriend. At some point, she must have had a moment of clarity and realized that she needed a "nice" guy instead. Still, she's a flake. She can't even hold down a job waitressing, and depends on her looks to find guys that will support her.
