A darker Bond would be a nice change, and Brosnan had that to some degree as did Dalton. But what I fear would be missing is Bond's cheekiness, his somewhat Imperialistic/above it all/racist demeanor, and of course, the womanizing. We all know how that doesn't fly today in the world's growing PC awareness.
The last thing someone wants to do to Bond is emasculate him. It's a little like pulling the carrot from Bugs Bunny's hand, and giving him a carob bar to chew on instead.
