Randy, I did this upgrade last year on my 82 SC. Got everything from Griffiths, easy fellow to do business with. I bought the rotary style compressor, all new hoses, receiver/drier, and an expansion valve. Everything fit the way it was suppose to fit. I stayed with R-12. Changing to another refrigerant will not work as well as the refrigerant that the system was designed around.
The job was more of a pain in the a$$ than difficult. Took me about 16 hrs but that included pulling the evap coil and cleaning it, putting all the straps back on, pulling a vacuum, and recharging the system.
The only problem I did not expect was mounting the compressor as it hit a aluminum boss on the intake manifold. Took me a while to grind the boss down with a air grinder equipped with a rasp type bit. Had little aluminum bits everywhere.
The good news is the system works as well as any SC can work due to the lack of air flow in the cabin. Yes, I have the bulkhead vent.
Do it again in a heart beat.
No more vibration when the compressor runs, the car idles better than it did with the York, and doesn't seem to draw as much power from the motor.
