The earlier cars had chrome plated brass frames, and later they were anodized aluminum. It sounds like yours are aluminum, so the results will be much like those for the Fuchs. There is a place that refinishes and re-anodizes the frames, but it ain't cheap. I think it is called Anobrite. Search for a recent thread on the subject. The Scotch Brite idea is interesting. That would be cheap, and might look great. In the name of science, I think you should give it a try (and post pics)!
