pushing speedo cable thru trans tunnel

I'm preparing for an engine drop on my 3.2L...there's a rubber grommet that surrounds the speedo (sensor) cables in the transmission tunnel. I know the cables have to be pushed thru before the drop. The little plastic covers on the speedo wires won't fit through the hole with the grommet...Should I just push the entire grommet/plug w/ the wires thru the hole? Cut the grommet etc...? Seems like a cheap part to replace... mostly concerned with preserving the wires and plastic covers. Any ideas...
