Back to a 356?

My first car was a 356 - a 400K miles beater I drove in high school. I've since bought 911s, Boxsters, and a 951. The 356 (in my memories) had a super high fun factor, and I've often thought of acquiring another.

To that end, I test drove one for sale locally. In my area, 356s are not plentiful, and it is very challenging to "drive several" to compare. The car I did drove raised many questions: Was the steering that imprecise? Were the brakes that soft? I know this is qualitative, but are these issues with this car (I don't remember thinking so on mine, but when I was 16 I hadn't exactly driven a ton of different cars) or with the model (am I just too used to modern cars now?).

Any thoughts, insights, or suggestions would be welcome.
